Mountain Bike Review - Get out the ride!
Mountain Biking is an exciting form of recreation that can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age or ability. There is more to mountain biking then just getting on a bike and riding off into the woods however.
Mountain biking is broken down into five categories:
Cross Country
Downhill
Free ride
Dirt Jump
Trails/street riding
Mountain biking is a also a fantastic way to stay in or get into shape but you have to be careful, mountain biking can be a lot of fun but it only takes one fall to get sidelined for a long time. Inherent to the sport of mountain biking is the risk of injury but you can limit your chances of being injured by making sure you have the proper equipment and it is maintained and in good condition.
Mountain Biking Equipment
On Bike
Seat - Although you will rarely be sitting in it, when you are you want it to be comfortable
Shocks/Suspension - If your mountain bike came equipped with shocks or a suspension system, you will want to check these periodically to make sure they are operating normally.
Frame - Check the frame before each ride for hairline cracks and dents that could lead to frame failure on the trails. It is easier to fix a frame then fix a frame and your teeth because you got lazy on maintenance.
Tires / Rims - Make sure your tires have plenty of tread remaining before each ride as well as getting rid of any foreign particles like thorns or other sharp objects embedded in your tires. Also make sure your rims are true and you don't have any loose spokes.
Tire Repair - You should always carry a tire repair kit for yourself and the unfortunate soul who forgot to pack one.
Bike Wrenches - You should also carry the standard issue wrenches in a bag in case a spoke pops or you need to tighten the handlebars.
Whatever the emergency, you want be as prepared as you can be.
Personal Equipment:
You should at a minimum have gloves, sunglasses, a good helmet, cycling pants with padding, and some type of water bladder for hydration along with some food in case you get lost out on the trails.
If you are into extreme mountain biking you may want to also look into arm and shoulder protection, leg protection, and chest and rib protection for an added level of security. Also carry a cell phone in case you need to make an emergency call.
Make sure you follow all trail rules, etiquette, and safety regulations if any and above all else have fun. No matter what your level of fitness, age, and ability mountain biking is great for cardio, muscle development, and an all around great time! Stop by
